renting a tent for car-camping? [Jul. 8th, 2008|06:57 pm]

[mood | surprised]

While backpacking, I use a rather modest sized tent, but I prefer a larger tent for car campsites.

I checked with the main Denver REI store and a large tent rental (admittedly for backpacking) is similar in price to the purchase price of a standard car-camping tent. Car-camping tents are unfortunately much heavier; given the luggage surcharges airlines are now imposing, it would cost me a lot to bring my own such car-camping tent as luggage (sigh).

Does anyone in the Denver area have such a tent that I could borrow (or rent) from Saturday, 26 July 2008, till Denvention?
(I am even willing to treat you to a reasonably fine dinner during Denvention). A suitable cot or air-mattress (with pump) would be a plus.

I can buy such a tent in Denver and throw it in the trash afterwards, but that seems such a waste (I realize that I could also donate somewhere, if I knew where to donate it).

Question about light rail and bus access to Convention Center [Jul. 8th, 2008|03:25 pm]

[celticmom1967]
For the sake of saving money, we are going to stay off of I-70 at a Howard Johnson's. It is on Federal Blvd. Does anyone know if there is light rail or convenient bus service to the convention center from that area each day? We could drive in and pay to park because it is affordable, but if it is cheaper to take the bus or light rail, then we'd like to do that to help save with gas costs and emissions.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

camping, lightning, the wee hours and the big rodent [Jul. 8th, 2008|11:24 am]

[mood | nervous]

To a certain degree, I am just trying to figure out my trip. At the risk of getting the Densha Otoko award, I have to cast about the Denvention community for help.

In almost every guide book, I have read about the danger of afternoon thunderstorms in the the Rockies. Hikes should be planned for the early morning.

However, I need a place to sleep at night. If I want to hop about Colorado, do I have to kill half my vacation because I have to wait for the motel office to open?
I have stayed a places where I have had to wait till 10AM to return the key, even though the check out time was 11AM!

Also, what are the campgrounds (both commercial and park service) like? In other regions, I have just rented a site and set up a tent. Is this a viable option in Colorado? If so, do I have to worry about bears ripping open the car for food (as was mentioned in a reply to one of my previous posts)?

Baseball game on August 6? [Jul. 8th, 2008|11:16 am]

denvention3

[jewelsong]
I noticed that the Rockies game is listed on the schedule for Wednesday!  Are people going as a group or are we just getting our tickets however and wherever?  Is there a general section of the stadium where folks are sitting?

I love baseball and living in the UK, I need my fix while I am in the USA.  Is anyone else planning on going to the game and do you want to try to get seats together?

Respond here or email me at julie.chilon at yahoo dot com.

I've been scanning and posting some old APAzines to my website, and just posted one that has an extensive writeup of Arisia '93 (PDF format). The writeup is on pages 6-11. I thought some here might find it interesting.

Edit: for some reason Snap seems to be breaking the direct link at least some of the time, so here's a link to the zine page - just click on the link for Rack & Rune #13.

Estes Park, Grand Lake or ??? [Jul. 7th, 2008|10:48 am]

denvention3

[capybaron]
[mood | curious]

I am planning to start my tour of the Rockies with Rocky Mountain National Park. Since I will probably have enough difficulty with the altitude, I am thinking of taking a hotel room for two nights (as opposed to a campground).
RNMP has not hotels, so if I want to stay someplace nearby, my choices seem to be either Estes Park or Grand Lake. Are hotels my only option (that is, are there hostels in the area)? Is there a preference for Grand Lake over Estes Park (or the other way around)?

Also, my book of Colorado hikes lists hikes to Emerald Lake (moderate), Flattop Mountain (strenuous), Little Yellowstone (moderate), Mirror Lake (moderate), Calypso Cascades (easy). Do the gentle readers have opinions on these hikes? In the Rocky Mountain National Park. are there are recommended hikes?

Selling my World Fantasy membership. [Jul. 7th, 2008|01:50 am]

[mood | money can bite me]

*sigh* Yeah. I just don't have the money for a flight to and a hotel in Calgary. Thanks, shitty US economy and weak dollar! Seriously, it's the plane fair that is sticking in my craw right now.

Anyway, I got the membership early so it's $125 USD, $25 less than the current going rate. Let me know here or via email if you would like it. I'd prefer payment via paypal, but a check or money order works, too.

Bleh. Next year, Jo. Next year. You can go to San Diego in 2009.

sometimes when I wake up my mind is wiped clean from the worries of yesterday - like an open blank canvas where the murky colors of my dreams leave water-colored splotches that fade as I brush my teeth.

then yesterday, and yesterday's yesterday comes trickling back in, like the volume in one of those cars that adjusts for speed - the faster I wash my face and walk out into the living room the quicker my brain seems to come alive.

this morning, though, i woke up with an Oasis song already in my head from yesterday, and the world was already at my beck and call before I touched coffee.  Things I told myself I have to remember -

  • i leave in 12 days for Tokyo
  • how does the wallpaper i was up until 3 am making last night look in the morning?
  • will every song we practice on Rock Band get stuck in my head that way or just the Oasis songs?
  • It's time, far past time, for me to do laundry
  • the dog is limping less, thank god, and she's going to be one of the people I miss a whole lot when I'm gone for a month
  • the dishes are never ending
  • My boyfriend is unhealthily interested in gameshows.  Unhealthily, I tell you.
  • Leaving for Japan doesn't seem real, but it will be.
  • we watch way too much reality TV - TLC, TLC, TLC.
what about you?  how do you wake up?  does it take that first sip of caffeine before your eyes open?

Possible lost item back in February [Jul. 6th, 2008|10:47 am]
pandemonium_bks
[goldeneye1]
Hi everyone, I was in one of your Board Game Night events back in February, and I think I lost a black leather-type portfolio folder in the events area. That folder, I believe at last check, contained mail addressed to me as and also at least one personal document of mine. This folder should also has gold-colored lettering commemorating a convention which took place back in 2000, and has quite a bit of pockets in it.

The possible nights that I may have lost this folder could be February 13, 20 (most likely) or 27, if I indeed last had it there.

If you have seen this folder or possibly have it which fits the description, please let me know. Thanks!

Put on Trigun. Western-inspired anime about guns, desert planets, redemption, human resiliency, donuts and portable confessionals are my panacea.

Now if only I could hunt down all 2 billion volumes of the manga.

Popular Fan in hospital; benefit concert [Jul. 5th, 2008|05:03 pm]

[teal_cuttlefish]
Long time Science Fiction fan Bruce Dane had an accident June 2 which has left him paralyzed from the neck down. He's had surgery on his neck and we are hoping for a lot of recovery, but it will be a lot of work and a long haul to get there. He is currently in ICU at Porter Hospital in Denver.

There will be a benefit concert on July 19th to help raise money for medical and future living expenses. The concert is being held at Soda Springs park in Manitou Springs Co. If you can't make it and would like to donate you may go to http://www.boomerbox.com .We'd love to see you there.

I will answer what questions I can. I am no longer on the newsgroup RASFF; someone may wish to post this information there as well.
